Leonardo Hotels, the European arm of Israel's Fattal Hotel Management Ltd. will establish a hotel in building of the former Stasi, the East German secret police, on Otto Braun Strasse, near Alexanderplatz, in east Berlin. Fattal Hotel chairman David Fattal and Berlin Mayor Franz Schultz laid the cornerstone of the new hotel in a ceremony last week.

The hotel will be called the Leonardo Royal Berlin. Renovation of the building and its conversion into a hotel will cost €45 million. The Bauhaus-style building is slated for preservation. The building façade and interior décor, including the marble and lighting will be preserved. The hotel will have 304 room, including 43 suites, and an eight-meter high lobby. The opening is slated for August 2009.

Leonardo Hotels CEO Daniel Roger said, "In order to meet the high standards required by our guests, we will create first class hotel comfort while retaining the historic character of the building."

The new hotel will bring the number of Leonardo Hotels in Berlin to four, including the Airport Hotel Berlin-Schoenefeld, the Hotel Best Western Leonardo Berlin and the Hotel Excelsior. Fattal had 25 Leonardo hotels across Europe by end of 2007, acquired at an investment of €350 million, and plans to buy 25 more this year at an investment of €500 million.
